- The presentation day will be held on Monday, December 18, at 10:15 a.m., at the Galician School of Public Administration in Santiago de Compostela.
- This European project is part of the Xunta de Galicia’s commitment to promote the involvement of local administrations in policies in favor of Biodiversity Restoration, the promotion of Green Infrastructures and Landscape Design between Galicia and Northern Portugal.
The Green Gap project, supported by the Interreg VI A Spain-Portugal program (POCETP) 2021-2027, is a collaboration between entities from Galicia and the North of Portugal, integrating a set of scientific entities, local entities and decision makers in the field of green infrastructure and nature. Its main objective is to promote green infrastructures from the local scale for the restoration of biodiversity, renaturalization and landscape design resilient to climate change in urban and rural areas of the Euroregion.
This initiative represents a firm commitment on the part of local administrations to strengthen their role as key players in the implementation and improvement of green infrastructure in the cross-border area. With a comprehensive approach, the project will be developed through several phases.
In the first stage, the need to promote green infrastructure planning and adaptation to climate change will be highlighted, with a special focus on protected natural areas in the transboundary space. The project will establish tools and methodologies to help local administrations design local green infrastructure strategies and make them compatible with local planning.
The action will be carried out at the local level, with the objective of creating a network of quality and multifunctional green infrastructure.
The second phase of the project will contribute to the development of pilot projects in the territory in terms of green infrastructure, with the aim of halting the loss of biodiversity, enhancing natural ecosystems and adapting the landscape to the effects of climate change. We will actively work to improve the urban environment of the area of action and promote ecosystem services to achieve sustainable development. And finally, the third phase will focus on the creation of a cross-border network for the coordination of Green Infrastructure and resilient landscapes, promoting the education and training of citizens.
Through coordinated actions, the Green Gap project aims to establish a network that is not only a vital component for biodiversity, but also contributes significantly to the sustainable development of the region.
This launch marks the beginning of an ambitious project that aims to become a benchmark in the promotion of green infrastructures, the conservation of biodiversity in the Euroregion and the design of resilient landscapes. The Green Gap project represents a joint commitment to promote a more sustainable territory adapted to the effects of climate change, integrating nature as a key aspect in territorial development.
The event will be attended by the Second Vice-president and Regional Minister of Environment, Territory and Housing, María Ángeles Vázquez Mejuto, as well as by the director of the Institute of Territorial Studies, Enrique Luis de Salvador Sánchez. Also present will be representatives of the organizations involved in the project: on the Portuguese side, the City Council of Paredes de Coura, the University of Minho, the City Council of Guimarães and the Landscape Laboratory; and on the Galician side, representatives of the Provincial Council of Ourense, the University of A Coruña, the CEER Foundation and the City Council of Pontevedra.
